Lawrence Malcom Stewart Jr., 93, of Marshalltown passed away on Wednesday January 22, 2025, at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown. The family would like to thank the staff at Glenwood who cared for him, along with Suncrest Home Health & Hospice team.
Memorial services for Lawrence will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. He was the son, and only child, of Lawrence Sr. and Dorothy Stewart. After several moves as a child the family settled in Osage City Kansas where Lawrence graduated high school. After high school he attended Kansas State University, where he met Mary Ann Eddy in 1951. They were married on July 13, 1952, in Havensville, KS. Lawrence served in the Army from 1952-1954 before returning to K-State University to finish his education. He received his BA in 1956 and completed graduate work in Psychology in 1959.
The Stewarts then moved to Marshalltown IA, where Lawrence was hired as one of the first Psychologists at the Mental Health Center of Central Iowa. After many years of dedication to his career and patients, he retired. During his retirement, he mentored numerous children and spent countless hours at the YMCA. Lawrence and Mary also enjoyed these years helping raise their great-grandchildren, Aidan and Brooke.
Playing scrabble nearly every single morning with Mary, countless games of chess with grandchildren, and nature walks and picnics with the kids were some of Lawrence’s favorite past times.
Lawrence and Mary were married 72 years until her death on September 20, 2023.
Lawrence is survived by his son, Lawrence III (Amy Ginsberg) of Delmar, NY; Son, Lance Stewart of Kansas City, KS; Daughter, Laraine (Fred Sly) Gallatin, TN; Lanesa (Dan Webber) of Marshalltown, Iowa. More than anything, Lawrence enjoyed his plethora of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, Lawrence and Dorothy and a host of other angels.
