Mr. Leo Matt, 72, of 1909 Stratford Lane, Marshalltown, died Saturday, March 17th, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20th, at St. Henrys Parish in Marshalltown with Fr. Louis Jaeger as celebrant. There will be a time of fellowship and refreshments immediately following in the church hall. He will be laid to rest at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery in Davenport. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday with an 8:00 vigil service. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born Leo Spalti Matt on June 30th, 1934, in Cherokee, Iowa, he was the son of Leo H. and Mona Lucille (Spalti) Matt. He was a proud graduate of Notre Dame University in 1956. While there, he met Elizabeth Ann Steif of South Bend, Indiana and the two were wed at Notre Dame on June 9th, 1956. A true Notre Dame fan until the end, he appropriately was called home on St. Patricks Day. Leo was the owner and operator of Matt Furniture in Marshalltown for 35 years until his retirement in 1997. He was an active member of St. Henrys Catholic Church and served on the church parish council, Knights of Columbus, the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Marshalltown School Board and served as president of the Elmwood Country Club for year 1974. He was passionate of golfing, Notre Dame and dearly loved his family. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Matt of Marshalltown, five sons: Marshall (Cindy) Matt of Bettendorf, Iowa, Greg (Robin) Matt of Houston, Texas, Tim (Betty) Matt of Frisco, Texas, Jeff (Joann) Matt of Bettendorf, Iowa and Gary (Courtney) Matt of Bettendorf, Iowa, nine grandchildren: Samantha, Hannah, Austin, Arianne, Keegan, Pierce, Norah, Abigail and Charlie Matt, his sister Marilynn Hoenig of Lincoln, Nebraska as well as a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents and brother, Marshall Matt.
