Leon Schade, 74, prominent Marshalltown hotelier, died suddenly Friday, October 5 (Thursday, October 4th) in Iowa) 2012 while on vacation in Jakarta, Indonesia. Leon Gustav Schade was born in Waterloo, Iowa on July 13, 1938; he was the son of Lester and Vivian (Luethje) Schade. Leon attended school in Gladbrook, Iowa graduating in 1956. He then attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where he played basketball and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelors Degree in Business. On March 18, 1961 Leon was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Gethmann at the United Methodist Church in Gladbrook, Iowa. Leon and Pat owned and operated the Best Western Regency Inn, Comfort Inn andSuper 8 Motelover the last 30 years. Recently retired, he enjoyed their homes in Sparks, Nevada and Gilbert, Arizona. Leon was a Rotarian, a member of First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown and University of Iowa I-Club. Leon was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Athletics fan, loved international travel, politics, modern technology, gardening and entertaining. Leon will be remembered for his compassion, his generosity, his sense of humor and big laugh, his strong opinions, and his love and loyalty to his family and friends. Leon was one of a kind.Left to cherish Leons memory are his wife of 51 years, Patricia; his daughters: Cynde (Tim) Turner of Twin Lakes, Iowa, Renee (Ron) Myers of Marshalltown and Gilbert, Arizona and Sue (John) Auer of Clive, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jeff Lynch, Jenny (Nick) Stein, Cory Turner, Ashley and Matthew Myers, Samantha, Jacob, and Michael Auer; his great-grandchildren: Mason and Harper Stein; and his sister, Judy (Marvin) Wendel of Gladbrook.Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Lester Schade.Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Immediately following, a Hawkeye-themed lunch will be served at the Best Western Regency Inn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials, which will be determined at a later date.
