Leon Stalzer, age 84, long-time Haverhill resident, died unexpectedly, Saturday, August 13th, at the Central Iowa Healthcare in Marshalltown. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, AUGUST 22nd, at the Immaculate Conception Oratory in Haverhill. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4-7:00 p.m. at St. Henrys Catholic Church in Marshalltown with a public vigil service/Rosary at 7:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Haverhill with full military honors presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 and by American Legion Posts in the Marshalltown area. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund honoring Leons life is being established. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Leon and his family. Ph. 641-844-1234. Born on April 5th, 1932, in Haverhill, he was one of eleven children born to Bernard and Frances (Jansen) Stalzer. He attended school at St. Josephs in Haverhill and graduated from St. Marys High School in Marshalltown. Mr. Stalzer served our country honorably in the United States Army for two years and was recipient of the Good Conduct and Marksman medals. On April 19th, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marianne Dunn, the daughter of Sylvester W. and Delia (Lyons) Dunn. The young couple farmed in Melbourne for one year before moving to the family farm north of Haverhill. In 1990, they moved into the town of Haverhill. Leon was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill - now Immaculate Conception Oratory, St. Henrys Catholic Church, as well as the Knights of Columbus, the 4th Degree Knights, American Legion and the former Moose Lodge. Leons memory will be cherished by his nine children: Marilyn (Dennis) Polley of Haverhill, Robert (Peggy) Stalzer of Laurel, Richard (Sheryl) Stalzer of Haverhill, Marlene (Mark) Napier of Tucson, AZ, Karen (Gordon) Hundley of Ankeny, Dale (Ann) Stalzer of Haverhill, Kay (Rick) Gammon of Ames, Jan (Jeff) Prachar of Bothell, WA, and Stacie (Ted) Schaper of State Center as well as 27 grandchildren, two step-grandsons, eight great grand-children and his siblings- Helen Wafer of Davenport, Jeanette (Harlan) Kloppenborg of State Center and Don (Judy) Stalzer of Haverhill, as well as many, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. In death, Leon rejoined his beloved Marianne who passed away on March 6th, 2002, his parents, siblings- Richard Stalzer, Evelyn (Andrew) Kopel, Ruth (Leo) Kopel, Mildred (Ed) Kurtz, Harold (Esther) Stalzer, Doris (Donald) Edler and Alice (Jerry) Schroyer; as well as sister-in-law Jeanette Stalzer and brother-in-law Richard Wafer.
