Leonard Duane Schnathorst, age 82, of LeGrand, died in the peace and comfort of his home on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 27 at 10:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery north of LeGrand and by the family farm with full honors provided by the combined VFW/American Legion of the surrounding area. Visitation will take place one hour prior beginning at 9:00 A.M. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for later designation. Born on August 20, 1939 in Marshalltown, he was the son of Henry and Clara (Miller) Schnathorst. He graduated from Marshalltown High School, where he was a well-known track star. On May 12, 1959 in Marshalltown, he was united in marriage to Gwendolyn McCord. Leonard served our country honorably in the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge from the service, they made their home in Marshalltown, LeGrand and moved to their farm north of LeGrand in 1974. After Gwen’s passing, he was blessed with a special companion, Pat Strickler, who has also preceded him in death. Leonard was a hardworking farmer and a man of few words. He was practical and filled with integrity. He enjoyed Belgian horses and spending time with his grandkids. He also was an avid Hawkeye and Vikings fan. Left to mourn his loss are his, children: Sherielyn Sue (Douglas) Heinrichs of Grand Prairie, Texas and Terry Lance (Tasha) Schnathorst of Marshalltown; daughter-in-law, Betty Schnathorst of Quarry; eight grandchildren: Molly (Dan) Voss, Michelle Heinrichs (Kelsey Lynch), Sarah (Carlton) Marshall, Paige (Brandon) Bucklin, Brett (Kylea) Schnathorst, Tessa (Ben) Frahm, Amy (Victor) Rojas and Morgan (Brandon) Thorn; great-grandchildren: Adilynn and Kennedy Frahm, Kaidon, Kallyn, and Kinlee Bucklin, Cienna and Callista Schnathorst, Aleia, Alayna and Zack Thorn, Zoey and one on the way, Marshall; his siblings: Linda Robbins, Vernon (Barbara) Schnathorst and Darlene (Jim) Mills; and several other relatives and friends, including childhood friend Larry Lukehart. In death he has rejoined his wife Gwen; his parents; son, Leonard Lynn Schnathorst; companion, Pat; sister, LeAnn Bates and brother-in-law, Gary Robbins.
