Lester L. Benda, 76, of Marshalltown passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.Funeral services will be held at 11:30 on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Phone 641-844-1234.Lester Leo Benda was born on August 24, 1935 in Tama County; he was the son of Charles Benda and Mary (Balvin) Benda. He attended school in the Montour area and served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1956 to1958. Lester was united in marriage to Patricia Stucker on August 14, 1965 in Burlington, Iowa. They later divorced. Lester was employed at Lennox and later at Fisher Controls for 35 years when he retired in 1990. He was a member of the local UAW as well as the Moose Lodge. Lester was an avid golfer and loved to play bingo. He was also the coach and manager of the Marshalltown Boxing Club and a little league coach. He loved to travel the United States as well as Germany. Above all else he enjoyed and treasured the time spent with his family.Left to cherish his memory are his children: Lori Williams of Marshalltown, Karen (Brian) Stanley of Liscomb and Martha Benda of Marshalltown; his five grandchildren: Derek, Jarrett, Landon, Brenton and Trevor; his siblings: Vitus Benda of Des Moines, Milo (Mildred) Benda of Traer, Emil (Inga) Benda of Illinois, Joey (Marion) Benda of Swisher, Ernie (Diane) Benda of Cedar Rapids and Leonard Benda from California.He is preceded in death by his parents; Charles and Mary, his siblings; Adolf Benda, Ludwig Benda, Vera Smith and Leota Lamparek.
