Lester Schmidt

Lester Schmidt, 85, of Marshall County, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa after suffering a fall. Funeral services will be held graveside at 1:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 14, 2016, at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family. He was the son of Hans and Cora Ethel (Wheeldon) Schmidt. Les received his education in one room schools and the Van Cleve High School. Lester served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War stationed in Alaska. On June 11, 1966, Lester was united in marriage to Katherine Manship, the love of his life, at the Church of Christ in Marshalltown, Iowa; they made their home on the farm and resided in Marshall County all of their married life. Lester farmed and worked the land his entire life. In addition Les was an investor and a self-made man. His hobbies included auctions, collecting, making and inventing things. Left to cherish his memory is his nephew, David Shearer of Marshalltown, Iowa and niece, Cathy Jacobs of Reno, Nevada. In death Lester rejoins his parents, Hans and Cora and his siblings, Angie Doupe, Russell Schmidt and Nedra Shearer
