Lester Wehrman, 77, of Laurel, died Easter Sunday evening, April 8th, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of McFarland Clinics, MMSC and Mary Greeley Medical Center for their compassionate care.Visitation and a celebration of his life will be held on Thursday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Ph 641-844-1234.Born on July 27th, 1929, at home on the family farm, he was the son of Richard and Nellie (Wagner) Wehrman. He attended school one year at Laurel and then Van Cleve, graduating from the Van Cleve High Schools Class of 1948.On his 23rd birthday (July 27th, 1952) he was united in marriage to Betty Coulter at the St. John UCC near Haverhill. They have resided on the Century farm all of their married lives. He was a member of 4-H and was a 4-H leader for the Van Cleve Wranglers, played and coached AAU Basketball, was president of the Independent Logan Township School board and the Laurel Lions Club. Les drove truck and then purchased a semi-tractor truck to haul cattle for K-Line of Newton in 1970. In May of 1988, he started working for Ferguson Grain and retired in April of 1997. He enjoyed his family, traveling (especially the WHO Holiday Travel Group with Lee Kline and Keith Kirkpatrick), the Iowa Hawkeyes, planting sweet corn and popcorn, shelling walnuts, making horseradish and traveling in the van with Betty.Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Betty, three dear children: Gary (Becky) of Marshalltown, Sherry of Fairfield, and Larry (Cathy) of rural Laurel, four treasured grandchildren: Jason and Crystal Wehrman and Ryan and Dan Wehrman, his sister Shirley, mother-in-law Mabel Coulter of Melbourne, sister-in-law Ruth Wehrman, brother-in-law Leonard Short Billman and brother-in-law Robert (Lorraine) Coulter of Melbourne, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.In death he has rejoined his mother and father, brother Elmer and his wife Doris Wehrman, sister Wanda Billman, brother Marvin Wehrman, brother-in-law Earl Knoll, father-in-law Leonard Coulter and infant grandson, Timmy.
