Lou Sponseller, 68, of Marshalltown, died Sunday night, December 9th, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 14th, at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rich King officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with flag presentation honors by the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. Born Lewis Frank Sponseller on September 3rd, 1939, in York, PA., he was the eldest of seven children born to John and Jean R. (Weaver) Sponseller, Jr. He graduated from the York High Schools Class of 1957 and later attended Penn State on a basketball scholarship. He served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965 which included a tour in Vietnam. Upon his return, he was employed at Wolfe Motor Company in Lancaster, PA. In 1966, he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, to teach auto mechanics at Lincoln Tech. The following year, he moved to Marshalltown, teaching auto mechanics at the Marshalltown Community College until 1977. After that time, he owned and operated Lous Champlin Station at 3rd Avenue and State Street. After the station closed, he worked for Krantmanns, McAtee Goodyear and most recently retired from Clemons Chevrolet. Lou was a member of the Elks Lodge (past Exalted Ruler), the Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 American Legion (past commander), the Iowa Golf Association, Marshalltown Mens Bowling Association, and umpired and played in the Marshalltown Park and Rec. Softball League. He treasured his family, his cocker spaniel dogs, Riley and Maxwell. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, loved playing golf, and fishing in Northern Minnesota. He enjoyed joking with friends and knew no strangers. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife Meg whom he married on February 11, 1989, three children: Kelli (Tommy) Thompson of Marshalltown, Daniel (Corrie) Sponseller of St. Joseph, MO, and Bradley Sponseller of Marshalltown, grandchildren: Brittany (Jake Meyers) Egleston, Alexandria and Eric Gomez all of Marshalltown, Mackaylie, Mariah, Cassie Sponseller all of St. Joseph, MO, Chandler Sponseller of Marshalltown, Kennedy Sponseller of St. Joseph and one on the way as well as his siblings: John E. II Butch (Sue) Sponseller, Patti (Harvey)) Shoffner all of York, PA., Cindy (Brock) Warner of Red Lion, PA., Tim (Sylvia) Sponseller of Vancouver, WA., and Sam (Annie) Sponseller of McAdoo, PA, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents and sister, Paula.
