Linda was the 1st of 3 children to Dwight and Shirley (Bryant) Appelgate, born on June 18, 1950, in Marshalltown. She graduated from South Tama High School in 1968. She continued her education at Mercy College of Health Sciences, where she received her X-Ray Tech Certification.
In the meantime, Linda was set up on a blind date (that the other half wasn’t too sure about); This is where Linda met her husband of 52 years. After a blind date with Patrick “Jim”, he kept her guessing for a few weeks but as they say, the rest is history. On July 3, 1971, Linda was united in marriage with Patrick James Walsh at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. From this union, they welcomed one son, Ryan.
Linda was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish – St. Henry’s, where she taught Sunday school for the children while her son was growing up.
Linda’s family was top priority in her life, until the end she was checking that Jim and Ryan were doing okay even when she was the one not well. Linda could be described as a peach, a sweetheart, a wonderful woman. She was the cook and entertainer of the family. If you left one of her events hungry, that was on you, because she would have had enough food to feed five small countries. Linda was known to be dressed to the nines – always earrings and one of her many favorite outfits.
Linda was superb at “selling” herself in interviews, but also exceeded once on the job. She worked at AEA for 10 years, McFarland Clinic, and Social Security Administration for 10 years until her retirement in 2012. Following retirement, Linda and Jim moved to Florida full time for a few years, before returning to their home of Marshalltown.
Linda was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; brother, Denny Appelgate; and Aunty Lu. She is survived by her husband, Jim of Marshalltown; son, Ryan (Kelli) Walsh of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Emily Paul, Jacob (Brittney) Paul, Amy Paul, Ashley (Kirby) Thiessen, Hayden Walsh and Dillon Walsh; and 11 great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Tom (Teresa) Appelgate of West Palm Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Sharlene Appelgate of Tama; along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and brothers and sisters-in-law.
