Linda Martha Winter Chaser was born March 10, 1946, in Rosebud, S.D. Linda was a proud
Sicangu Lakota of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Thelma
(Hawktrack) Winter Chaser. Her parents instilled three goals in their children: religion,
education, and family. Linda attended St. Mary’s School for Indian Girls and graduated from
Flandreau Indian School in S.D. Linda went on to receive a Secretarial Certificate from Mitchell
Vo-Tech in Mitchell S.D. and a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Black Hills State
University in Spearfish S.D.
Her working career started in Winner as an assistant to Social Workers. After gaining her
Sociology degree, she worked in various service positions. In the late 80’s to 1991, she was the
head start director for CRST Headstart in Eagle Butte S.D. The summer of 1991, she was a
hostess at the Crazy Horse Memorial and met many friends on their travels. Fall of 1991 to May
1992, she lived in Tempe, Arizona with her sisters. In fall of 1992, she moved to Mission S.D. to
become a Lakota language teacher/Winning Spirit Tutor. In 2000, she moved to Vermillion S.D
where she was a Field Operations Assistant and helped handicapped individuals in their
employment goals. In 2002, a move to Tama, Iowa, led Linda to begin work for the Meskwaki
Casino for four years, and then became the Diabetes Coordinator for the Meskwaki Tribal
Health Clinic for 18 years until her retirement in August of 2022. She was dedicated to helping
others. In her free time, Linda enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her puppy.
She specially loved spending time with her family and was very involved with her
grandchildren’s activities.
Linda is survived by her two children: Gerald Oliver and Janice (Theodore Provencial)
Eaglehawk, both of Marshalltown, IA.; her four grandchildren: Dalton Oliver of Eaglebutte, SD,
Skylier (Cheyenne) Kiukanpi of Tama, IA, Lucy Winter Chaser of Marshalltown, IA, and Caiden
Winter Chaser also of Marshalltown, IA; her four great-grandchildren: Breylynn, Heath, Nova,
and Koda; her sister Vivian Winter Chaser of Scottsdale, AZ and her puppy of 6 ½ years, Kuwa.
She was close to her children (lakota traditions views nieces and nephews as children): Mary
Kessay, Lyle Bear, Toby Clairmont, Alicia, Derek, and Wade Brandis. Linda maintained special
ties to her stepchildren, Curly, Frances, Angela, and Nicole Eagle Hawk over the years. They
greeted each other warmly and lovingly. Linda taught us the traditional meaning of love in
spite of divorces and separations, she ensured those bonds between families remained strong.
This is the strength of family.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Thelma; her brothers: Thomas Melvin and
Clinton Winter Chaser; her sister and brother-in-law Frela (Winter Chaser) and Marvin Bear
Looks Back; her son Jeremy Oliver; her stepson Curly Eaglehawk; her grandkids: Conan,
