Lonnie Dale Barnes, Jr. was born January 4, 1954 in Omaha, Nebraska, the youngest of three to Lonnie, Sr. and Doris (Tompkins) Barnes. He attended Marshalltown Schools and graduated from Marshalltown High School Class of 1972. After graduation he went to work for Marshalltown Trowel, then Maytag Corp in Newton until it closed. He worked as maintenance supervisor at Grant Park Apartments and The Embers Retirement Community before retiring in 2014 to become a self-employed landlord. As a young man, Lonnie enjoyed snowmobiles, hunting pheasants and boating.

On June 29, 1985, Lonnie and his 7 year old son Chad, were united in marriage to Beth Tichy at the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. The couple made their home in Marshalltown and welcomed two more sons, Brandon and Taylor. When the boys were young, Lonnie coached their soccer teams and was proud of the many medals earned. He was a great fixer of all things and could always give advice on how to make things better. Over the years he had fixed up several cars but his interest turned to the Corvettes, promising to sell the first one he bought, if he found a better one. For years now, there have been two corvettes in the garage. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and commissioned a 9.5 foot Hawkeye Gnome from a damaged oak tree in his front yard. Known to his family as The Crappie Whisperer, he found a love for catfishing in 2023. He received the Master Angler Award from the Iowa DNR when he caught a 38 pound flathead catfish 42” long right off the dock. He had hoped for one more summer of fishing and boating at Lake Ponderosa.

Lonnie will be dearly missed by his wife of 39 years, Beth, his sons, Chad (Sara) Barnes and children Landen and Evan of Phoenix, AZ, Brandon Barnes of Chicago, IL, and Taylor Barnes and daughter Bria Marie of Marshalltown, IA; his siblings, Sue (Don) Bunting and family of Anamosa, IA, Steve Barnes and family of State Center, Iowa; sisters in law, Jacki (Gary) Bolar and family of Marshalltown, Linda Roth and family of Farmer City, IL, Robin Mancieri and family of Marshalltown, IA; brother in law, Robert (Sally) Mancieri and family of Marshalltown, and his granddog, Bentley Franklin Barnes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Barnes, Sr. and Doris Tompkins Uhde; his brother, Mark Uhde; mother and father in law, Maxine and Frank Tichy; brothers-in-law, Nic Mancieri and Loren Roth; nephews-in-law Mario Miles Mancieri and Jay Nicolas Mancieri; and his best dog pals, Manda, Jeb Boy and Sammy.
