Doug West

April 14, 1938 — January 18, 2025

Loren “Doug” West, age 86 of Marshalltown, Iowa and formerly of Foley, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home in Marshalltown, Iowa on the morning of January 18, 2025.


Funeral services for Doug will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Elmwood Cemetery in LaMoille where Doug will be laid to rest with full military honors. Loren was born April 14, 1938 at home in State Center, Iowa. He was the oldest of two sons born to Loren L. and Mary Virginia (Silvius) West. Doug attended many schools growing up, to be exact he attended 11 schools in 12 years in three separate states. He moved to Marshalltown with his family his senior year of high school and graduated Marshalltown High School in 1956.


His senior year of high school, he met his future bride, Patricia Trump. On December 26, 1956, he and Patricia were united in marriage in Marshalltown, Iowa. In 1956, he joined the United States Army and he was posted in Alaska through 1959 when he was honorably discharged from service. They returned home to Iowa and Doug took up farming for a period of five years until he did a career change to the Police Department and eventually the Sherriff’s where he held the position of Deputy Sherriff. Doug stayed busy with raising his four children, Mike, Bill, Carolyn and Bruce. He took up truck driving at Rodeway Express for 13 years before moving to Unionville, Missouri where he purchased a farm of his own. While in Missouri, he attended the Missouri Auction School in Kansas City and became an auctioneer for the Auction Corner in Dillon, Iowa. As they grew older, Doug and Patricia moved to Foley, Alabama.


While in Alabama, Doug was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police as well as being a member of the Baptist Church Choir. He had fond memories of traveling from the East to West Coasts on his Gold Wing Motorcycle with Patricia. He was always hard working with a love for his family and music. He took up playing the harmonica over the years and when he was younger traveled with the school choir to perform. He loved to work and had loved his last job as an auctioneer.


Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Mike (Regina) West of Montour, IA, Bill (Karen) West of Omaha, NE, Carolyn (Curt) Meier of Altoona, IA, and Bruce (Paula) West of Unionville, MO; his nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Dennis West of Las Vegas, NV; and his nieces, Christi Cifelli and Dawn West-Sipes.


He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Ann West; his mother, Mary Virginia West and his father, Loren (Emma) West.
