Lorena Steen

Lorena Steen, 80, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the afternoon of October 12, 2024 at Accura Healthcare of Marshalltown with her family at her side.

A graveside service for Lorena will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home an hour prior to graveside services. Memorials in Lorena’s name may be directed to the family for a later designation. Lorena Mae Johnson was born on November 30, 1943 in State Center, Iowa. She was one of five children born to Silas and Luella (Baer) Johnson. Lorena grew up in the Marshalltown area and attended schools within the Marshalltown school system. She would graduate from Marshalltown High School.

She was married to Don Steen and from this union they had two children, Charles and Christopher. She also gained three bonus children from their union. After high school, Lorena got a job working for Marshalltown Medical Center (at the time Evangelical Deaconess Hospital) and received on job training to become a CNA. Over the course of many years, she held many positions at the hospital retiring after 40 years in the ICU unit. She and Don remained married until the time of his passing in 2018.

In her younger years, Lorena and Don were part of the Gold Wing Club and went out on motorcycle rides. After work she attended a coffee group for nurses at the hospital. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and word searches, a collector of cooking books and other books in general, watching older western shows, cooking shows (particularly The Pioneer Woman) and The Golden Girls. After retirement she loved to be at home with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Charles (Andrea) Steen of Marshalltown, IA, Christopher Steen of Marshalltown, IA, Julie Hunt of Paris, AR, and Scott (Melissa) Steen of Urbandale, IA; her grandchildren, Andrew (Angela) Steen, Brittany Steen, Candace (Tyler) Muller, Zachary (Joann) Steen, Jonathan Steen, Matthew Steen, Chad (Brandy) Bracy, Jesse Hunt, Amy Hunt-Bean, Heston (Brooklyn) Steen and Casey Steen; nine great-grandchildren, and her brother, Londell (Ellen) Johnson of Marshalltown, IA alongside numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Don Steen; her step-son, Ronald Steen; her parents, Silas and Luella Johnson; and siblings, Richard Johnson in infancy, Ilean Smith and Verne Johnson.
