Lucille M. Devick, 95, of Marshalltown, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday morning, April 5, 2012, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at First Friends Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held Monday, April 9, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Lucille Mae Sturtz was born on March 18, 1917, in rural Tama County, Iowa; she was the daughter of Fred and Mildred Z. (Merritt) Sturtz. Lucille attended country schools in Tama County and graduated in the Laurel High School Class of 1934; she then attended Chillicothe Business College. After graduation, she worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 1938 to 1939, for Francis Brothers & Co. and W.K. Kellogg (Kelloggs cereal) Company sales office in Kansas City from 1940 to 1943. In March of 1943, Lucille was the first woman from Highland Township (Tama County) to join the Womens Marine Corps, serving as a secretary to the Commandant of the United States Marines in Washington, D.C until the end of WWII. While there, she was privileged to be chosen to march in FDRs funeral procession. After the war, she returned to working for Kelloggs.In 1950, Lucille was united in marriage to Mearle W. Rasmussen in Kansas City. To this union, two sons were born. When Mearle passed away in 1960, Lucille went to work for the Laurel, Iowa, school system as a secretary to support her family. In March of 1963, she met Clair W. Devick, a widower with four children, and on June 15, 1963 in Marshalltown, Iowa, they married, blending the two families.Lucille has been a longtime member of the First Friends Church in Marshalltown, the Maryanna Circle, and had been the recording clerk of the monthly meeting for many years. Lucille enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, needlework, reading, traveling with Clair, and preparing care packages for Diane. But her most treasured job of all was caring for her family as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 49 years: Clair; her children: Dennis (Betty) Devick of Des Moines, Iowa; Bruce Devick of Marshalltown, Iowa; Diane Devick of Fairfax, Virginia; Tedd (Marilyn) Devick of Ames, Iowa; Nadine (Clelland) Looney of Creston, Iowa; and Toby Devick of Marshalltown, Iowa; her grandchildren: Brian Devick, Denise Runza, Theresa Hays, Samuel Devick, Garrick Looney, Gabe Looney, Myklyn Ripperger, Tiffany Tiernan, Trisha Devick, Tia Frydendall, Tyler Devick, Joel Devick, and Caleb Devick; and 20 great-grandchildren and a sister: Rena Quinn of Sacramento ,California.Lucille was preceded in death by her first husband, Mearle; her parents, Fred and Mildred; and a grandson, Christopher Devick.Memorials may be directed to the First Friends Church in Marshalltown.
