Marie Klaas 73, of the Grandview Heights in Marshalltown, formerly of Melbourne, died Tuesday, July 14th, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. She was the first resident of the new hospice home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 18th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Fr. Jim Miller of St. Marys Catholic Church officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery at Haverhill. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice. Born Marie Klaas on February 1st, 1936, at the family home in Marshall County, she was the daughter of George and Elsie (Depping) Klaas. She graduated from the Melbourne High School and assisted her parents all of their lives on the farm and later into the town of Melbourne. She was a former member of St. Josephs Catholic Church of Rhodes and later in State Center. Marie enjoyed art, music, board games, making cookies and angel food cake and treasured her family- especially taking care of her nieces, nephew and great-nieces and nephews. In April, 2005, she became a member of the Grandview Heights family all of whom she loved. Surviving her are her only brother, Arnold (Mina) Klaas of State Center, nieces Linda (Thom) Burke and their children Amber and Amy Smith; Barbara (Richard) Willoughby and children Ricky and Brittany; Rita Klaas (Larry Hensen) and children Lora, Robert and Lindsay Laverty and nephew Ronald (Brandi) Klaas of Columbia, SC. In death she has rejoined her parents.
