Marilyn Balmer, age 87, of Green Mountain, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023 at the Wesley Park Centre in Newton.
Funeral services for Marilyn will take place on Thursday, June 1 at 10:30 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation will be held the hour prior beginning at 9:30 A.M. She will be laid to rest at the Green Mountain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for later designation. Born Marilyn Marlene Overstake on August 12, 1935 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of George and Martha Marie (Lieberum) Overstake. She attended Green Mountain School, graduating with the class of 1953.
On August 15, 1954, three days following her 19th birthday, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Russel Balmer, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Green Mountain was the family home all of their married lives. The couple was blessed with 65 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2019.
Marilyn worked at Lynk’s, Green Mountain School in food services and Sharon’s Place. She loved kids and always had them at their house as well as helped with a daycare. She was an active and faithful member of the Green Mountain United Church of Christ, where she was involved with Women’s Fellowship and taught Sunday school. In her free-time, she enjoyed gardening, quilting and reading. She also loved attending her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids school and sporting events.
Left to cherish her memory is her children: Doug (Kathy) Balmer of Kellogg, DeAnn (Mark) Vogt of Ankeny and Dennis (the late Cathy) Balmer of Green Mountain; 10 grandchildren: Lindsey (Kyer) Robinson, Allie (Phillip) Sherman, Karey (Aaron) Wilson, Drew (Makenna) Balmer, Curt Balmer, Tanya (Aaron) Pierson, Kevin Balmer, Mike (Michelle) Sibinski, Kelly (Dan) Sorem and Ryan Sibinski (Nicole); and 23 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In death, she rejoined her beloved Russ, her parents, daughter-in-law Cathy Balmer, sister Doris Petrie and foster brother Bernard “Bud” Hancock.
