Marion Matthew Hurd

Marion Matthew Hurd, 88, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013, under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Services for Marion will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at St. Henrys Catholic Church in Marshalltown, Iowa with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., prior to services at the church. He will be laid to rest in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed in Marions name to the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Marion Matthew Hurd was born on August 9, 1924, the son of Joseph Adrian and Evaline Anna (Bender) Hurd. He was raised and educated in Perry, Iowa, graduating from St. Patricks High School in 1942. Marion honorably served his country, in the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force. He was united in marriage to Jean Elizabeth Doran on February 14, 1950 in Perry, Iowa. In this union they had five children. For nearly 25 years, Marion farmed near Ogden, Iowa before moving to New Virginia, Iowa in 1974, where he continued to farm. Later, Marion worked for Jimmy Dean in Osceola for 13 years, retiring as a lead-man in maintenance.He was a member of the church council and trustee at St. Johns Catholic Church in Ogden, a Boy Scout leader, served on the Parish Council of St. Bernards Catholic Church in Osceola, Iowa, and a member of the UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) Union. Marion enjoyed spending time at their family cabin in Canada, including many summer months after he retired. He was always busy with projects or improvements and very good at mechanical and electrical work. He also enjoyed photography and had the privilege of being part of one of the 2009 Honor Flights to Washington D.C. Marion is survived by his wife of 63 years Jean Hurd; children: Bob (Evelyn) Hurd of Redondo Beach, California. Jeff (Deb) Hurd of Hesston, Kansas, Fr. Tim Hurd of Zwolle, Louisiana, Ron (Ruth) Hurd of Marshalltown, Iowa and Ginger (Mike) Broussard of Shreveport, Louisiana; grandchildren: Erin, Kirsten, Stephanie, Rebecca, Christopher, Emily, Julie, Alex, Claire and Adrian; great grandchildren: Annabel, Emma and Phoebe, also numerous nieces and nephews. Marion is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joseph and Eugene and one sister Arva.
