Marleen was born Catherine Marleen Meyers on April 19th, 1931, one of two children born to Pete and Jess Meyers, in Laurel, Iowa. She attended school in the area of her birth and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls with her degree in Humanities and Music. She began her teaching career in the Union-Whitten Schools and later a lifetime of teaching 1000s of students in Marshalltown. She retired from the Miller Junior High in 1991 after 37 years of dedication to the school. Marleen traveled as many miles as students she taught. Her travels took her around the world and many of the continents. Her favorite place to visit was Germany. She had eclectic tastes in collecting- anything from African tribal masks, musical instruments to Nativity sets. Marleen was passionate about teaching and music. She supported many community events but also the Quad-Cities Orchestra. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church and the Marshalltown Retired Teachers Association. Even though she was not a birth mother, she had 1000s of children who learned the art of music and the views of the world from her. She has one niece, Brenda (Bret) Adland of Savannah, IL, and their children- Sara (Jamie) McGrail of Belvidere, IL., and Jay Adland of Savannah; a nephew- Randy Meyers of Marshalltown and his children- Tabitha (Patrick) Hendershott of Johnston and Heather (Paul) Wayman of Gilman, as well as many close friends including Mark Weitzel and Tammy Moore and families, the Hessenius family, friends, contemporaries and neighbors. In death, she rejoined her parents, brother Tom and dear friend, Richard Hessenius.
