Born Marlene Elizabeth Paul on July 3rd, 1933, she was the youngest child of Richard and Ella (Friend) Paul. She attended school in Ferguson and graduated with the class of 1950. Marlene was united in marriage to Elmer Halverson on May 24, 1954 and they resided with their family in Quarry. She was a member of the Laurel United Methodist Church and was deeply rooted in her faith and devoted to her family. She retired from Lennox Industries in 1988 and focused on her most cherished role of being a grandma. She was an avid LDF Warhawk/East Marshall Mustang fan and never missed a game, concert, play or event her kids, grandkids or great-grandkids were involved in. After her husband passed away at the young age of 33, she firmly planted her feet in raising her family, obtaining her driver’s license and gaining employment. Though her bank account might indicate modest means, she was truly one of the richest people in the county. She was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan- which you could hear her yelling at the TV on any given game day. She loved spending her time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, playing solitaire, cracking jokes with her sister over the phone and eating Ev’s lemon ice cream. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Cheryl Halverson (Kurt Ratliff), Elmo (Karen) Halverson, Mark Halverson, Laurie Halverson, Tina (Randy) Coppock and Tammy (Rick) Paul; grandchildren: Jocelin (Greg) Johnson, Jami (Josh) Baas, Rachelle (Jordan) Overton, Nichole Heaverlo (Nick Stonewall), Marshall (Vicki) Halverson, Josh Halverson, Mandi (Josh) Lattie, Clayton (Cassandra) Ratliff, Jill (Kenny) Hunt and Heath Lane; her great-grandchildren: Jackson and Jude Baas, Jace, Kenna and Landry Johnson, Veda and Violet Overton, Jocee Mason, Landon Stonewall, Brooklyn, Jackson, Hannah and Briley Lane, Mackenzie, Jesse and Aiden Ratliff, Ben, Cole, Layla and Isaac Hunt. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law: Wilma Paul, Mary Lou Mull and Betty (Joe) Overstake and many nieces and nephews. In death, Marlene rejoins her husband Elmer, parents Richard and Ella, daughter Marie, grandsons Tyler and Hayden, brothers: Don, Dale, Kenneth, Harold and Daryl; sister Ruth, brothers-in-law: Lawrence, Ed, Leroy, Paul and Jerry; and sisters-in-law: Goldie, Madeline, Dorothy, Katherine and Ida.
