Marty dedicated over 37 years to the State of Iowa as a correctional officer before retiring in 2016. His work in the prison system was more than just a job, it was a passion where he worked tirelessly fighting for a safe working environment for the staff in the Department of Corrections. He served as President of AFSCME Local 2985 and as District Vice President of Eastern Iowa for AFSCME Iowa Council 61. Marty also served on the board of the Iowa Federation of Labor and was a founding member of AFSCME Corrections United, serving on that board for AFSCME in Washington D.C. Marty lobbied for State and Federal corrections bills and traveled around the country organizing prisons for AFSCME. On May 26, 2018, Marty was united in marriage to Tracy Holven-Harms at the Fireside Winery in Marengo, Iowa. Tracy was the love of his life and this union blessed him with three children and eight grandchildren, who were a big part of their lives. Marty loved spending time with them, attending their activities and sparking their interest in motorcycles after purchasing minibikes for the grandchildren. In his free time, Marty enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing and boating. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Tracy; their children: Heather (Joe) Myers of Muscatine, Nathan (Brooke) Holven of Garwin and Chelsea Holven of Hiawatha; eight grandchildren: Aidan, Justus, Adelynn, Caleb, Sophia, Landon, Dillon and Macy; his dad Harold and mom Lorraine Hathaway of Altoona; his brother, Robert Hathaway of Elk Horn; niece Nicole Hathaway and two nephews: Harold Hathaway and Jimmy (Taylor) Hathaway.
