Martin Skala, 58, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the morning of February 2, 2023 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by his children.
Per Martin’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and no formal services will be held at this time. A family led celebration will be held at a later date. Memorials in Martin’s name may be directed to his family for a later designation. Martin DePorres Skala was born on April 16, 1964 to parents Jerry and Marie (Barabe’) Skala in Phoenix, Arizona. He was one of 10 children born to his family. He attended Greenway High School from which he received his high school diploma. Martin lived in various states after school along with his family including, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, and Iowa. Martin raised his three children, Tabitha, Derek, and Kadin. He worked for Jeld-Wen for many years in their maintenance department.
In his free time, Martin loved his Harley Davidson Motorcycles. For many years he attended Daytona Bike Week in Florida and Sturgis in South Dakota. Additionally, he cheered on his favorite sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Astros. He watched MMA, car auctions, American Pickers and various races over the years on the TV. He enjoyed his ability to travel, go and get new tattoos, and take various trips to ledges state park. Most of all he loved to go and get Mexican food with his family, spend time with his grandkids, and make cookies with the grandkids around the holidays.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Tabitha (Jake) Callaway, Derek (Victoria) Skala, and Kadin Skala; his grandchildren, Arrah Skala, Raegan Skala, Alia Callaway, Jake Callaway, and his granddaughter Iris Skala who is on the way. Additionally, he is survived by his mother, Marie Skala; his siblings, Anne (Randy) DeVries, Patrick Skala, Mary (Herb) Fears, Sheila (Craig) Buehler, Dominick Skala, and Tim (Ally) Skala; alongside numerous extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his son, Joshua Skala; father, Jerry Skala; his paternal and maternal grandparents; and four siblings.
