Born on June 19th, 1931, in Des Moines, he was the son of Stella Rutherford. His dad, Mr. Davis, made the unfortunate decision of not being a part of Marvins life, but Marvin had the blessing of his grandpa and grandma Rutherford in his life and they were responsible for much of his upbringing. He graduated from the Newburg School and enjoyed being a part of playing basketball there. On July 21st, 1956, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Grace Onthank, at the Old Grove Church south of Grinnell with Marty and Mary Garr in a double ceremony. Marvin and Grace made their home in Grinnell for a short time and later Marshalltown. He began working at Maytag and later for Virgil Adams on his farm. Marvin retired from Marshall Print. Marvin enjoyed old cars, time with his grandchildren, the nightly tradition of a Pepsi and bowl of ice cream before bed and ALL foods- even in a wheelchair he could get to the fridge! Left to cherish his memory are grace, his loving wife of 59 years, four children- Gloria (Dennis) Carkhuff of Marshalltown; Donna (Chris) Sloat of Melbourne; Jeff (Brenda) Davis of Marshalltown and Lester Davis of Mason City, grandchildren- Danielle, Kim, Amy, Amanda, Jesse, Jaime, great-grandchildren- Ryan, Sebastian, Dakotah, Nataile, Naomi, Katie, Arden, Keaton and Willow, as well as other family and friends. In death, Marvin rejoined his mother, his grandparents, step-father Warren and step-brother Ed Burchard.
