Marvin “Marv” Frank Detrick, a proud marine, age 81 of Marshalltown, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 in the comfort of his home with his family by his side.
Born on February 21, 1945 in Marshalltown, the son of Frank and Vernice (Schrader) Detrick. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1963 and Ellsworth Community College in 1965. Marv proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1968 to 1970.
On June 16, 1973, Marv was united in marriage with Debbie Martin. They were blessed with 53 years of memories and adventures. Marv and Debbie lived in Illinois for 30 years, until their move back to Marshalltown in 2002.
Marv and Debbie enjoyed camping, vacationing, and spending time with their family. Marv was a car enthusiast - helping on a pit crew at the racetrack in his younger years, rebuilding cars, and his most recent job as the unofficially secretary and door greeter at his son’s shop, Independent Auto.
Marv was known for his dedication and love for his family including his four-legged children, a handshake and conversation to anyone he would meet. Marv was ornery and always good for a joke or two. If you were picked on, you knew you were loved. The other side of Marv was a heart of gold, as he was willing to lend a hand to anyone, as long as they were grateful and gave a simple thank you.
Marv worked as a tool and die maker primarily, but he has also worked at Meskwaki Bingo Casino as a slot technician, and most recently before retirement, he was a Marshalltown Public Schools bus driver for 6 years.
Marv was cherished and loved by all he crossed paths with. His legacy is one of hard work and love – a testament of a life well lived. His wisdom and humbled humor will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
In death, Marv is reunited with his parents: Frank and Vernice; and his sisters, Paulette and Audree. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Debbie; children: Michael Shawn (Carrie) Osborn, Scott (Ann Marie) Detrick, and April (Tracy) Evans; grandchildren: Kayla, Kristen, Dakota, Jacob, Shyanne, Tianna, Jessal and Maya; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Paul (Michelle) Detrick, Sandy (Chuck) Calliguire, Carol Huff, Elaine (Rich) Rund, Sharon (Tim) Winkle, Diana Slifer, and Janice McNary; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Per Marv’s wishes, cremation rites will take place. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with military honors to follow conducted by combined local VFW and American Legion. Memorial donations may be directed to the Marshalltown V.F.W. Post 839.
