Mary Bohlke, age 85, of Ankeny, Iowa and formerly of Marshalltown, went to be with her Lord and Savior on the evening of February 1, 2025 in Des Moines, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Henry Church. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with a vigil service to be held at 7:00 P.M. Mary Lou Otteros was born July 13, 1939 in Clarion, Iowa. She was the oldest of two daughters born to Magnus and Jeanette (Tilghman) Otteros. Mary attended school in Clarion where she grew up later graduating from Clarion High School in 1957. She furthered her education at the University of Northern Iowa.
On November 26, 1960, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Daniel E. Bohlke in Clarion, Iowa. They together made a home in Marshalltown, Iowa and raised six children, Deb, Lori, Danny, Connie, Mike and Michelle. She began a career in education working for the Marshalltown Community School District as a para educator at Woodbury Elementary. In addition to the schools, Mary was an active member with St. Francis of Assisi Parish staying active with helping in the kitchen and whatever help she could be to others. After 25 years working for the school district, Mary retired in 1994 and continued her work helping part time as a substitute teacher whenever she was able to do so. She remained in Marshalltown until 2015 when she moved to Des Moines following the passing of Daniel.
In her free time, she occupied her time by working on crossword puzzles, cooking for family and friends, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and reading a good book. She was active in her family loving to go to all of her grandchildren’s sporting events whenever she was able. Her faith was important to her and remained always at the top of whatever she did.
Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Deb (Dennis) Brezina of Maple Grove, MN, Lori Vajgrt of Tulsa, OK, Danny (Errin) Bohlke of Marshalltown, IA, Connie Bohlke-McDermott of Des Moines, IA and Michelle (Tim) Bohlke-White of Des Moines, IA; her grandchildren, Kelli (Dugan), Nick (Angie), Alex (Calla), Brad (Tia), Blake (Autumn), Emily (Lucas), Derek , Grant (Kelsey), Max, William, Clare, Drew and Danielle; her five great-grandchildren; sister, Judy (Joe) VanCleave of Ft. Collins, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Daniel Bohlke; her son, Mike Bohlke; parents, Magnus and Jeanette Otteros; alongside numerous loved extended family members.
