The gracious and loving spirit of Mary Etta Fisher, age 96, longtime rural Garwin area resident and most recently of Marshalltown, left this earthly life on the evening of Thursday, September 16th, with her family at her side. Mary Etta had resided under the care of Grandview Heights since July. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 21st, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Born Mary Etta Dobson on August 28th, 1925, in rural Tama County, she was the daughter of Harold and Lura (Strong) Dobson. She received her education in the area of her birth. On February 9th, 1946, she was united in marriage to a handsome young man returning from WWII by the name of Gerald Fisher. They were married at the Carlton Brethren parsonage and lived their entire married lives farming not far from there. Mary Etta was a proud farm wife and mother who worked faithfully alongside Gerald. The couple was blessed with three sons- Ray, Dean and Brad. She was a faithful member of the Carlton Brethren Church and enjoyed fishing trips, her family’s activities, traveling with Gerald and in later years her sisters and son, Dean, playing cards and ballroom dancing. She enjoyed social times with friends and family alike and will be greatly missed by all of them. Also mourning her loss will be her favorite stores as she was known by her family as the “Shopping Queen.” Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Dean (Vicki) Fisher of rural Montour and Bradley (Terri) of rural Montour; her precious grandchildren-Anna (Kelly) Wacha of Grinnell, Michael (Nosika) of Chesapeake, VA, and Brian (Justine) of Garwin, great-grandchildren- Tylynn, Tasia, Natalie, Alexander and Gage; her sister Darlene Hanner of Marshalltown and her brother, Dick (Judy) Dobson of Iowa City, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In eternal life, Mary Etta has been rejoined with her beloved Gerald who died in March of 2005, her son Ray in June of 2012, parents and step-mother Peg, and her sisters Carol Kouba and Joann Katzer.
