Mary "Myrt" Hasenwinkel

June 8, 1957 — December 8, 2024

Mary Elizabeth “Myrt” (Waters) Hasenwinkel

June 8th, 1957 – December 8th, 2024

After a short illness, Mary has found peace and gone home to God, while in the care of hospice at Southridge Specialty Care.

Mary was the fifth of five children born to Jeffrey Waters and Mary Ann (Rockwell) Waters.

Mary started working for her father, Jeff, at H&W Motor Express as his secretary. Later, she went to work for Fisher Controls in Order Entry for 23 years. After leaving Fisher Controls, she worked for Lowe’s Flower Shop and CIRSI Adult Daycare before finding a job at Lenihan. Mary worked there as a para-educator for behavioral students until she retired eight years later. She often stated this was the most challenging and satisfying job she had.

Mary also volunteered with the Big Brother Big Sisters program and had two girls assigned to her. One made a more lasting relationship, and she and Carissa Bryant remained friends until Mary’s passing.

Mary and Matt watched each other across the Fareway meat counter for two years before she got the courage to give her phone number to a checker to give to Matt. In April 1997, they were married at the Willard Mansion in Marshalltown.

She was unable to have children, so got a “total package” when she married Matt – not only a loving, caring husband, but two stepchildren, as well!

Mary leaves behind her husband, Matt; stepchildren: Amber of Fort Worth, TX and Seth (Bobbie) of Chicago; two grandchildren: Andersyn and Remi; two brothers: Mike (Lori) Waters and Pat (Joan) Waters; 13 nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; two sisters-in-law: Sue Waters and Holly Wilks) and one brother-in-law, Paul Hasenwinkel.

In eternal life, Mary is reunited with her parents Jeff and Mary Ann, brother Mark, sister Kathy, great-niece Jossilyn, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary Ann and Leland Hasenwinkel, as well as both her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Per the wishes of Mary and her family, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will take place on Friday, December 13 at 1:30 P.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with visitation beginning one hour prior at 12:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Mary's name to your charity of choice. For additional questions or to leave a condolence, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234.
