Mary Sue Penrod, 83, of Gilman, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at her home and under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home. Memorial services for Sue will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place after the service from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice Home, CIRSI, Mid Iowa Community Action or to the family for designation. Visitation will immediately follow the celebration of life from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Born Mary “Sue” Cates on August 10, 1937 in Texarkana, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Alvin K. and Luria P. (Driggers) Cates. She grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Paschal High School in 1955. Sue received several adult education certificates through online classes in word processing. Sue married James Kenneth Penrod on March 23, 1956 in Fort Worth. They were married 46 years before his passing in 2002. She worked at MCI Telecommunications as an administrative assistant. While living in Texas, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Plano and more recently attended the Church of Christ in Marshalltown. In her free time, Sue enjoyed crafting, sewing, gardening flowers, shopping, playing board games and dominoes. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Michael Penrod of Arlington, Texas, Randal Penrod of Marshalltown and Deleana (Tim) Roseland of Gilman; six grandchildren: Matthew Penrod, Adam Penrod, Jill (Chris) Lewis, Craig (Brenda) Roseland, Lori (Justin) Miller and Curt Roseland; seven great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law Laura (Sam) Silvera. Sue is preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Alvin and Lauria; brother, Kenneth R. Cates and her sister-in-law’s: Billie Jean Spradlin and Ruth Cates and one brother-in-law John Spradlin.
