Matthew Ray Allen Thompson, 52, of Des Moines, Iowa and formerly of Marshalltown, passed away in the comfort of his home on the morning of Monday, March 18, 2024.


Services for Matthew will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024 beginning at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Matthew was born January 28, 1972. He was the son of Raymond Evans and Mary Grother-Duckworth. He grew up in both Des Moines and Tama, Iowa and later graduated from South Tama High School in 1991. Matthew furthered his education and attended Marshalltown Community College where he received his Associates of Arts degree.


Matthew worked from CDS Publishing company in Des Moines, Iowa from 1993 to 2007. During this time, he was also raising his two children, Jordyn and Bryan. In 2009, Matthew was united in marriage to Shelly Brownfield and they were together for nine years until her passing in 2018. He worked for Central Iowa Truck Wash in Marshalltown on and off between 2013 and 2020. In 2020, Matthew went back to living in Des Moines from Marshalltown.


In his free time, Matthew loved to go golfing in the spring and summers and then participated in Tuesday night bowling leagues in Des Moines. He enjoyed going fishing, cheering on Chicago Bears Football and watching NASCAR to cheer on Dale Earnhardt. His family was by far his most important and some memories that they cherish are having him take them on the weekends to feed the ducks at Riverside, getting pizza together and renting videos from Family Video.


He is survived by his children, Jordyn Thompson and Bryan Thompson; his granddaughter Kamari Jo Doyle; his mother, Mary Grother-Duckworth and step-mother Anna Evans Balliger; his siblings, Tammy Thompson, Kevin (Judie) Thompson, Ron Rosenburg, Theresa Handsacker, Kathy (Larry) Goodwin, Tony (Amanda) Boatwright, and Russell (Trudy) Rosenburg.


He is preceded in death by his wife, Shelly Brownfield; his father, Raymond Evans; his sister Debbie Thompson; his brothers Tony and Dennis Evans; and three nephews, Todd, Dennis and Russell Thompson.
