Max E. Canfield, 93, longtime Marshalltown barber, passed from this life to rejoin his beloved Grace, on the night of Wednesday, April 22nd, at the Iowa Veterans Home. Public graveside services for Max will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. Public visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, where his family will be present to greet friends. Born on the family farm just northeast of the town of Milton, Iowa, he was the son of Emmett Alfred and Sybil Marie (Price) Canfield. Max began school in a one-room schoolhouse down the road from the family farm and graduated from the Cantril High School in 1939. He excelled in basketball and baseball in school. In the fall of 1939, Max began the education of his lifelong career in barbering in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Canfield served our country honorably in WWII, from October of 1942 until receiving his honorable discharge in July of 1945. Max was a part of the 551st Medical Hospital Ship Platoon stationed in New Guinea and was recipient of many awards including the Italian, Aleutian and Rhineland campaign bronze stars, good conduct medal and lapel pins, the Asiatic/Pacific theatre Campaign Ribbon, European/African/Middle East Campaign Ribbon, and three overseas bars, amongst others. During his military career, he married the love of his life, Grace Elizabeth Anderson at the United Methodist Church in Keosauqua, Iowa, on July 28th, of 1944. They made their home in Marshalltown where Max cut generations of hair until his retirement in 2011 after 59 years. Max was also a faithful member of the 1st Congregational Church and formerly Grace United Methodist Church, the Marshall Masonic Lodge #108 A.F. & A.M. (serving as past worshipful master) and the Frank Lewis Glick American Legion Post #46. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Candy Albaugh of Ames and Paulett Berg of Marshalltown, grandsons- Andrew Albaugh of Ames, Tony (Krista) Albaugh of Clive, Brian (Jenny) Berg of Marshalltown and Adam Berg of Marshalltown, Jeremy (Nicole) Berg of Marshalltown, great-grandchildren Trixie, Logan, emma, Karsten, Colton, and a great granddaughter to be born in July, and a niece, Geraldine Robinson of Keosauqua, Iowa. In death, he rejoined his beloved Grace, his parents, his daughter Laura Jo, grandson Christopher Michael Berg, brother-in-law Edgar Smith, sister-in-law Dora Smith and his son-in-law Mark Albaugh.
