Max L. Duncan, 93, of LeGrand, died Monday morning, August 20th, at the Iowa Veterans Home Sheeler Building where he has resided since 2004. His death came peacefully at 6:40 a.m. with his family at his side. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 23rd, at the LeGrand Friends Church with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Max and his family. Ph 844-1234. Born Max Leroy Duncan on August 22nd, 1913, in LeGrand, Iowa, he was the son of Ray Hunt and Anna (Lutz) Duncan. He received his education in the area of his birth and was a lifelong resident of LeGrand with the exception of service time. Mr. Duncan served our country proudly in the United States Army from April of 1944 until returning stateside seven months later. He served in the European Theatre under General Patton of the 4th Armored Division, took part in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded near Kearig, Germany and later was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his stateside return, he spent eight months at the O-Reilly Hospital in Springfield, MO. On May 29th, 1937, he was united in marriage to Bernice Moore in Marshalltown. He was employed at Lennox Manufacturing, Chicago-Northwestern and the Town of LeGrand. Max was a 50 year member of the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46, the DAV and the LeGrand Senior Citizens and attended the LeGrand Friends Church. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and treasured his family. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 70 years, Bernice, his children: Sandra Jean (Darold) Nuese of Dillon and Larry (Barb) Duncan of Montour, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one-great-great-grandson, other family and friends and his Iowa Veterans Home family. In death, he has rejoined his parents, three brothers and one sister.
