Gene attended the Ferguson School until he left to work the family farm. Gene farmed with his family for many years. On June 16, 1946, Gene was united in marriage to Doris Batesole in Marshalltown. The two made their lives together, and from this union four children were born. While raising his family Gene worked for Farm & Home Supply Company in Marshalltown, getting to know farmers from throughout the county.  He enjoyed a long retirement in Marshalltown with his wife Doris. He was an avid gardener who grew amazing tomatoes that he shared with family and friends.  He loved polka dancing with Doris in Lincoln, Iowa, and spending time with his group of friends when they would gather to socialize and play cards. Gene was always there to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and family members anytime they needed it. His sense of humor will never be forgotten. Left to cherish Gene’s memory are his children: Mark (Connie) Holubar of Garland, Texas, Terry (Lisa Alberts) Holubar of Marshalltown, Barry (Ellen) Holubar of Chicago and son-in-law Jim Shaw of Wilbur, Nebraska. He also is survived by his grandchildren: Madie (Jason) Gibson of San Diego, California, Tanner Holubar of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Dylan Holubar of San Marcos, Texas, and Brandon and Matthew Holubar of Marshalltown, as well as great grandchildren, Jovann, Ezra and Ryder. He is survived by siblings Joe Holubar of Marshalltown, Betty Fouts of State Center, and sister-in-law Louise Holubar of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years Doris, daughter Nancy Shaw, sisters Doris Wilkening, Mary Mayer, Josey Shank, brother Dale Holubar, and parents Joe and Ina.
