Max D. Howard, 90, of State Center, died Monday morning, February 6, 2023 surrounded by his family, at the Story County Hospital in Nevada.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. February 11, 2023 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Daniel from Iowa River Church of the Brethren officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may attend a service at 10 a.m. and coffee and cookies will be served immediately after the service. Born November 7, 1932 at Marshalltown, he was the son of Edward and Reba (Rank) Howard. He attended Le Grand High School and graduated in May of 1951. Upon graduation, Max enlisted in the U.S. Army and then transferred to the Fleet Reserve of the United States Navy and after 20 years he retired in October 1971. The Navy provided a means for Max to travel the world, to countries like Spain, Italy, Cuba, Japan, Virgin Islands, and many of the US states. His favorite place to visit was Sanford, Florida. He was an avid reader and liked history and politics.
Left to cherish his memory are his nieces and nephews; Julie (Doug) Riley of State Center, Dale (Sharon) Olson, Marshalltown, Linda Clark, Ottumwa, Dawn (Greg) Lintz of Des Moines; Jeff Howard, Oregon; and several great nieces and nephews.
Max is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Reba Howard, brother Lloyd, sister-in-law, Marjorie Howard; niece Darla Howard and sister Janice, brother-in-law, Arnold Olson.
