Max Stanley

Max Eugene Stanley, 83, of Albion, Iowa, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014 in Weslaco, Texas after a courageous twenty year battle with cancer. Cremation rites have been accorded and a public visitation will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Max Eugene Stanley, son of Harold and Hazel Weaver Stanley was born on August 28, 1930 near Grinnell, Iowa. Max had attended country school in rural Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1947. While in high school, and after graduating, Max worked as a meat cutter for the Thriftway Grocery Store. He was transferred to Boone where he met Shirley Preston. Max and Shirley were united in marriage on June 4, 1950. Max returned to farm in the Grinnell and Kellogg area before buying his own farm in Marshall County. Max sold his farm in 1985 and started working for the Marshalltown School District first as a custodian and then as a carpenter and an electrician. He retired in 1995. Max loved to dance and play his accordion. He and Shirley had a three piece group and would play at all of the Marshalltown nursing homes for twenty years. Max also enjoyed restoring old farm tractors. Max spent nineteen winters in his home in Weslaco, Texas. Max was a member of Farm Bureau and the Albion Methodist Church. He also served on the Conrad Coop Board as the President. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years; Shirley. Children: Dr. Keith Stanley and his fiance Terri of Wilton, Iowa, Gary (Peg) Stanley of Reinbeck, Iowa and Eldon (Becky) Stanley of Gilman, Iowa. Sister: Linda (Larry) Ficek of Center Point, Iowa. Sister in law Joan Stanley of Osceola, Iowa. Nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Max is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Virgil.
