Merle Metge, 88, of Conrad, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. Visitation will be held from10:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the family, Iowa River Hospice, or BCERT. Merle Glenn Metge was born on October 7, 1924, in State Center, Iowa. He was the son of August and Thelma (Conkin) Metge. Merle attended school in State Center until his parents moved to Conrad in 1937, and then graduated with the class of 1942. On August 12, 1945, Merle was united in marriage to Marietta Haren at the Central Christian Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Merle and Marietta lived in rural Conrad until they retired 25 years ago to Conrad. After Merle retired he enjoyed driving the school bus for BCLUW and working with the kids. He had been an umpire for girls softball and boys baseball for 35 years and always enjoyed watching the Cyclones and Hawkeyes (mostly the Hawkeyes). He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and thoroughly enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. He had been a Past Master of Roman Lodge AM and FM, a member of the Oakview Nursing Home Board, Senior Citizen Housing Board, a charter member of BCERT First Responders, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. Left to cherish Merles memory is his wife of 68 years, Marietta of Conrad. Children: Marla (Kent) Daggett of Culver City, CA; Myrna Allen of Sacramento, CA; Steve (Deanne) Metge of Rolla, MO; and Denny (Kelly) Metge of Conrad, IA. Grandchildren: Derek ( Melissa) Daggett of Chatsworth, CA; Darin (Carlene) Daggett of Los Angeles, CA; Darik (Iva) Metge of Warrensburg, Mo; Cory (Stacy) Metge of Colorado Springs, CO; and Taylor Metge of Conrad. Great-grandchildren: Alyssa and Kylee Daggett, Brian and Connor Daggett, Olivia and Simon Metge, Ethan and Aleah Metge. He is also survived by one sister Vivian Dennis of Conrad. In death Merle rejoins his parents, August and Thelma, and a grandson Brian Achenbaugh.
