Michael Merritt Sharer was born on May 23, 1942 at St. Thomas Mary Hospital in Marshalltown to Jack and Lucille (Merritt) Sharer. From a very early age, he began working with his grandparents on their cattle farm, which he lovingly referred to as “Oak Ridge Ranch.” After graduating from Laurel High School in 1961, Mick was drafted in the United States Army and honorably served until 1965. On August 3, 1968 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Susan “Sue” Fuller. They resided in Marshalltown their entire married life, where together they raised their beautiful daughter, Missy, who was his pride and joy. In addition to his work at “the ranch,” Mick worked for almost 40 years for Emerson – Fisher Controls before retiring in 2005. He was very actively involved as a member of the Marshalltown UAW. He was also a member of the Laurel Methodist Church and the Iowa and National Angus Associations. Every year, Mick looked forward to attending the Iowa Winter Beef Expo. He loved his Angus calves and cows at the ranch and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 53 years, Sue Sharer of Marshalltown; his daughter, Melissa “Missy” (John) Pieters of Marshalltown; grandchildren: Brock (Addie) Pieters and Lincoln Pieters; his brother, Jack Sharer; nieces and nephews: Marty (Karen) Sharer, Julie Sharer, Angie (David) Fouch, Jodi Breniman, Todd (Betty) Nash and Angie Nash; several other relatives and many, many friends. Mick is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lucille Sharer; his sister, Theresa Sharer-Benoit; maternal grandparents, Mark and Pearl Merritt, his in-laws, Robert and Elaine Fuller and nephew, Scott Nash.
