Mildred was born on April 5, 1921, in Plainfield, Wisconsin to Edna and Glen Walker. She was adopted by her stepfather when her mother married Thomas Wise in 1930. She called Thomas her dad. Mildred was known as Mid to all her friends. Mildred went to school through 2nd grade in Cedar Falls, Iowa. While there, she lived with her Aunt Millie, whom she loved very much. The family moved to Des Moines where Mildred went to junior high school. She moved to Marshalltown in 1935, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1939. She attended Marshalltown Junior College, then Moser Secretarial School in Chicago. Mildreds mom, Edna Wise, owned the Book Nook on Main Street. Mildred worked there as a teen. Mid was united in marriage to Robert L. M. Johnson in the Methodist Church on February 6, 1942. Bob served as a Navy officer for four years. During that time Mid lived in New York and San Francisco. They moved to Clinton, where Bob owned his own architectural engineering firm. Mid returned to Marshalltown in 1979 to take care of her ailing mother. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a lifetime member of Spinning Wheel Chapter of DAV, being admitted April 15, 1944. Mid loved visiting tea rooms with her friends. She loved watching the birds that visited her back yard. She like the game of golf and always knew who was winning. She was a beautiful seamstress, sewing her own clothes when she was younger. Mid often told the story her mom told her: A blue bird lit on the window sill the day she was born, therefore a bluebird brought her into this world. Mildred was preceded in death by her Mom, Dad, and husband, Robert. Memorials may be directed in her name to Iowa River Hospice.
