Myrene Appelgate

Myrene Appelgate, 89, of rural Marshalltown, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018, at Accura Health Care in Marshalltown, under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home.  Services for Myrene are scheduled for Monday, May 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church near Gladbrook. Public visitation is on Sunday, May 13, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to either the Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church or to the Iowa River Hospice Home. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Myrene and her family.  Myrene Yetley was born on March 20, 1929, in Marshalltown to Lawrence and Mary Glenn (Shedenhelm) Yetley. She graduated from Green Mountain High School then went on to receive her Associate’s Degree at Marshalltown Community College. On August 1, 1948, Myrene was united in marriage to Floyd Appelgate at the Gladbrook Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church. Myrene was married to Floyd sixty-four years. Following her five children through their school and church activities, was always a joy to her. Myrene was an active member of the church, serving over the years as Sunday School superintendent, vacation Bible school director and youth director, among other responsibilities. Some of her enjoyable pastimes included sewing, gardening and tending to the hostas which she thoroughly enjoyed. Viewing songbirds at the feeder and the occasional rare bird passing through was also a favorite part of her day.  Myrene is survived by her five children and their families: LaRae (Jim) Little of Toledo and their children, Charity (Matt) Bandstra with Grace, Noah, Samuel and Faith; Ben (Clarissa) Little with Lexi and Christian; and Andy Little: Cheryl (Mike) Callahan of rural Marshalltown and their children, Abbe (Brett) Hand with Serah, Judah, Aidan and Brenna; Nathan (Rebecca) Callahan with Alice, Mary Jo and Hannah; Jared (Lindsey) Callahan with Isaac and Cameron: Mark (Shelly) Appelgate of rural Marshalltown and their children, Megan (Ben) Gonzalez with Benjamin, Jonathan; and Makayla; Myra (Josh) Anderson with Avery and Dane; and Travis (Angie) Appelgate with Elisha and Ruth: Merle (Jane) Appelgate of rural Marshalltown and their children, Kaleb (Taylor) with Liam and Sawyer, Seth (Kayla) with son Jeb; and Caitlin: LeAnn (John) Gaulke of Altoona and their children Jordan (Abby) with daughter Vivian, Josiah and Hannah. Myrene is also survived by her sisters, Marjane (Cecil) Taylor and Maradean Egger and a brother, Mervin (Beth) Yetley. Myrene is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd and her parents Lawrence and Mary Glenn.
