Noel E. Jonesy Jones, 94, of Marshalltown, died Monday, June 29, 2009, at MMSC while under the care of Iowa River Hospice.Private family memorial services will be held at a future date. There is no visitation planned. Memorials in Jonesys name made be made to Iowa River Hospice. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Phone 641-844-1234.Thanks to Jonesy, auto mechanics students at Marshalltown High School learned the meaning of torque in a variety of graphic ways, which may have resulted in, among other things, sore ears.Jonesy coach football at MHS in addition to his teaching duties, following a career that began in Boxholm, continued in Graettinger, Lake City, and at Boone, where he coached football and girls basketball at Boone High School and boys basketball at Boone Sacred Heart High School.He graduated from Colo High School and earned letters in baseball, basketball, and football at Western Union College (Westmar) where he was named a small-college All-American fullback and, according to newspapers at that time, was a star athlete. Jonesy moved to Marshalltown in 1965 where he coached sophomore football and taught auto mechanics until his retirement in 1980.After his retirement, Jonesy showed Tennessee Walking Horses and his prize stallion, Bums Casey Jones, won a national title. He married Helen McGrory in 1943 and she preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage.Jonesy is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Rick) Deines of Marshalltown and his son, Mark (Cheryl Ann) Jones of Spokane, WA. In addition, he is survived by two grandchildren, Erin (Ryan) Dehl of Marshalltown and Melissa Schrader of Chicago, a great-grandchild, and three sisters, Connie (Frank) Lunn of Harcourt, Beverly (Don) Brayton of Eagle Grove, and Patty (James) Lunn of Otho.He was preceded in death by his wife, his two brothers, and his two sisters.And, for those students who got the wrong answer to his usual last test question in auto mechanics, the answer was always C- torque.
