Norman Johnson, 94, a longtime farmer of rural Marshalltown, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Grandview Heights Rehab and Healthcare.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Le Grand Friends Church in Le Grand, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Military Honors will be provided by the combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard. Memorials may be directed to Le Grand Friends Church or House of Compassion. Norman Ernest Johnson was born on February 19, 1924, in Le Grand, Iowa; he was the son of Lyell and Ursula (Mills) Johnson. Norman attended school in the Le Grand School District, graduating with the Class of 1941. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy in WWII from 1941 until 1945. He was in 12 major battles in the south Pacific during his time in the service and was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered to end the war. On January 28, 1951, Norman was united in marriage to Charlotte (West) Johnson at the Laurel Methodist Church. Norman and Charlotte farmed and raised their family near LeGrand, a life they truly enjoyed. He was a member of Le Grand Friends Church and was always very involved as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Missions Committee. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, reading, puzzles, back packing, ham radio, letter writing, storytelling canoeing, bird watching, owl calling and exploring the country by car; he was a volunteer at House of Compassion. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Kirk (LouAnn) Johnson of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Douglas (Connie) Johnson of Ames, Iowa, Steven (Barbara) Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa and Suzanne (David) Wignall of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandchildren: Trevor (Jenny) Johnson, Seth Johnson, Luke Johnson, Sam Johnson, Josh Johnson, Emily (Steve) Johnson, Taylor (Lauren) Johnson, Charlotte Johnson, Zack Johnson, Alisha Wignall, and Shane (Bridget) Wignall; great-grandchild, Emmett Burton, and Norman’s siblings: Robert Johnson of Minnetonka, Minnesota and Maynard Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa. In death, Norman rejoins his parents, Lyell and Ursula Johnson and his wife of 42 years, Charlotte.
