Norman E. Chief Thompson, 70, of Marshalltown, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at his home while under the care of his loving family and Iowa River Hospice.Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, August 10, 2009, at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial donations in Chiefs name may be made to Iowa River Hospice or Marshalltown Public Library. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been caring for Chief and his family. Ph 641-844-1234.Norman Everett Thompson was born on November 19, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the son of Leo and Lela (Sidwell) Thompson. He was raised in Legrand and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1957. He enlisted in the United States Navy after high school and served our country honorably for 20 years. On December 1, 1989, Chief married Debra McCurnin at Redeemer Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Marshalltown for all of their married lives. Chief was a member of the American Legion and Redeemer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, eating out on Friday nights, his neighbors (the Sharon Avenue Gang), and the Chicago Cubs.He will be missed by his wife, Debra, of Marshalltown, his children, Kenneth Lee Thompson of Waterloo and Mark Allen Thompson of Omaha; his four-legged child, Frankie James, a Yorkshire terrier; his mother-in-law, Mildred McCurnin of Marshalltown; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vicky and Charles Stanfield of Marshalltown; his niece, Jenny Smith of Marshalltown; his nephew, David Stanfield, of Marshalltown; his 5 great-nieces and great-nephews, Jamie, Joe, Eysak, Kyran, and Jadyn; his cousin, Bernard Uhde of Marshalltown; and many friends.In death, he has rejoined his parents, his brother, David Thompson, and his father-in-law, Maurice McCurnin.
