"Pat"

Patricia Jane Smith, 81, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away March 18, 2023 at UnityPoint Hospital in Marshalltown. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, with a funeral service immediately following at 2:00 pm.

Pat was born on August 30, 1941 in Marshalltown, IA to Walter (Woody) and Vida (Wilson) King. Pat grew up in Conrad, IA and graduated from Beaman-Conrad High School in 1960. Pat started nursing school after high school and married Phillip Doud in 1962, to which 2 sons were born; Darin and Brian. Pat later married Robert Beck in 1969, who adopted Darin and Brian, and they settled in Marshalltown. Pat returned to nursing school and graduated with an RN degree in 1977, and began working at the Iowa Veterans Home. Bob passed away in 1983. Pat later married Rick Smith in 1989. After 25 years of service at the Veterans Home, Pat retired after battling colon cancer. She was greatly missed by her co-workers and the residents. She enjoyed her retirement years with Rick until his passing in 2020.

Pat was devoted to her family and faith. She had a kind soul, and spent her life serving others. Pat enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and tending to her many flower gardens. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, her beautiful smile, and her kind heart.

Pat is survived by her loving sons; Darin Beck (Tom O'Shea) of Iowa City, Brian (Karla) Beck of Polk City, 3 grandchildren; Travis Beck (Cassie) of Ankeny, Brittany (Andrew) Shelton of Cedar Falls, Trey (Emily) Beck of Gilbert; 6 great-grandchildren; step-daughters Laurel (Jeff) Thompson of Cedar Falls, Allison (John) Deike of Clear Lake and step-grandchildren Alex and Max Deike. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Beck, brother and sister-in-law Warren and Dorothy King, husband Rick Smith, and grandson Cole Beck.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the The Willows of Marshalltown – who took such great care of Pat in her last years
