Paul Edward Baker, 75, of Marshalltown died Thursday, August 20th, 2009 at his home while under the care of Iowa River Hospice and with his loving family by his side. A celebration of Pauls life will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 25th at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Paul and his family, phone 641-844-1234. Paul Edward Baker was born April 21, 1934 to Howard and Hazel Maughan Baker in New Sharon, IA. He graduated from New Sharon High School in 1951. He graduated from the Iowa Institute of Telegraphers, Marshalltown, in 1954, with a certification in American Code. He served in the United States Army from October 1954 to October 1956 as a telegrapher, using International Code. Paul married Betty Lobberecht in 1959. Betty died in 1992. Paul worked for the M and Saint L Railroad, Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher clerk and depot agent from 1954 to 1994 and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad. He served in various positions in his union. Paul was the last railroad depot agent in Iowa for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Paul was a member of Masonic Lodge Number 108. Paul married Sandra Johnson in 1993. They resided in Albion and Marshalltown. Paul enjoyed Ford and Mercury cars, reading and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Charles Baker, Donnie Baker, Larry Baker and Robert Baker. He is survived by: his wife, Sandra; children, Terry and Jackie Webster, Nevada; Kim Webster, Hubbard; Howard and Mandy Baker, State Center; Audrey and Craig Hawkins, Laurel; and Tammy and Tim Rons, Ames; grandchildren Shauna, Luke, Justin, Jared, Jake, Holee, Nicole, Johnathan, Devon, Levi, Cassey, and Caitlin; and his brothers Lyle Baker, Greensboro, NC, and Jerry Baker, New Sharon. Memorial contributions may be sent to the family for distribution to Pauls charitable causes.
