Paul Henry Phillips was born June 20, 1948 in Odessa, Greece. He was orphaned at a young age and came to the United States at age nine after being adopted by Henry and Mildred (Castor) Phillips. Paul grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas in Germany from 1968 to 1970.
Once he was honorably discharged from service, Paul remained in Germany and met his wife, Gerda Nikodemus. On December 18, 1969, they were united in marriage in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. They began a family in Germany having three children, Anke, Paul Jr., and Annie Phillips. They all remained together as a family in Germany until 1977 when they moved back to the United States and came to settle in Marshalltown. Over the next many years, Paul held many jobs working as a carpenter, painting for Down’s Painting, welding for Midwestern Machine and Welding, Meskwaki Bingo and Casino, ABM, and Marshalltown Trowell.
In his free time, Paul was a member of ABATE Iowa District 6 and the Garwin American Legion. He loved to go for rides on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and would go to the bike rallies in Algona, Humbolt and travel to Sturgis. He was a family man through and through and spent as much time as he was able to with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In his younger years he enjoyed going camping and fishing as well as attending benefit runs. He was always surrounded by family or friends and was loved by many.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife, Gerda Phillips; his children, Anke Phillips, Paul Phillips Jr., and Annie Phillips; his grandchildren, Breanna (Scotty) Kesl-Mills, Dylan (Megan) Phillips, Jaylynn Phillips and Savanna Phillips; his great-grandchildren, Imani, Kayden, and Stella Phillips; alongside his niece, Tiffany (Andrew) Welch and their family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mildred Phillips and his best friend, David Welch.
