The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Phyllis and her family. Phyllis Arlene Grooters was born on May 28, 1930 in Boyden, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Gilbert and Kathryn Grooters.  She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1948 and then attended TC/Teachers College.  Phyllis also worked at the phone company in Cedar Falls.  Phyllis married Harry Hansen, the love of her life, on May 15, 1954 in Cedar Falls.  Harry likes to tell the story that he picked Phyllis up on a corner at the bus stop.  However, Phyllis laughs and reports that did not happen! Phyllis was a proud homemaker as she enjoyed raising their 3 children, going on family vacations, and attended all of their school activities.  Some of her interests/hobbies included needle point, reading, watching cooking shows on TV and completing puzzles and word search books.  She took great pride in planting flowers and maintaining her rhubarb patch.  She also volunteered at the hospital in Marshalltown.  Thursday was her special day of the week!  Phyllis got her hair done at a salon on a weekly basis for the past 50 years!  She completed her “hair day” with a little shopping, lunch and an ice cream treat.  Phyllis especially enjoyed celebrating nearly all of the holidays with a family dinner.  She thoroughly enjoyed planning/cooking the meal and spending time with family.  However, her pride and joy were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She especially enjoyed attending all school activities and sporting events for her 3 granddaughters.  She had one thing on her bucket list and that was to ride in a hot air balloon and she conquered it! Phyllis is survived by her 3 children: Mike (Susan) Hansen of Forney, Texas, Karen (Ken) Madison of Marshalltown, Nancy Schoborg of Marshalltown; her three granddaughters: Kelcy Crane, Katy (Joe) Stonner, and Natasha (Nate) Emery; her two stepgrandchildren Jason (Tiffany) Madison and Alisha Neuroth (Tim Thomas); her 3 great-grandsons: Kamden Crane, Bennett Stonner, Nash Emery; her 7 step great-grandchilden: Landen and Alivia Neuroth, Kaylee and Lucas Thomas, Jase Madison, Kaitlyn Tiernan, Tristan Tiernan (Lynnette Rasmussen and Arya).  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Phyllis is preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry, Kelcy’s husband (Braden Crane), her parents Kathryn and Gilbert Grooters, 2 siblings Lyle (Shirley) Grooters and Marilynn (Glenn) Hagerty.
