Randy was born on March 20,1953 (first day of spring) in Ames, Iowa. He was the son of Ray Glen and Jean Ann (Marsh) Weir. He graduated from Colo High School in 1971 then attended AIB in Des Moines, Iowa. Later in life he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University and a master’s degree from Viterbo University.
While growing up he worked for Weir’s Trucking and Shelling until 1988. Randy pursued various jobs in his lifetime which highlighted his talents. He worked for the D.O.T., St. Clair Krieger, Japanese Cultural Exchange, Pizza Hut, directed various choruses and drove school bus for the Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD). He taught math and provided technological support for 18 years at Miller Middle School for MCSD. Randy retired from teaching in 2015 and returned to driving school bus. The school bus barn held a special place in his heart as he created many special relationships with his co-workers, specifically the mechanics, as they worked together on projects. He also spent lots of time not driving bus but rather playing cards and dominos. Randy ran the shot clock for the Marshalltown Community College basketball games for many years, which kept him up to date on rules and timeouts of basketball and enjoyed the comradery of the guys at the table.
On May 22, 1976, Randy was united in marriage to Carolyn E. Parry. Randy and Carolyn met during Marshalltown Community Theater’s (MCT) production of Guys and Dolls. I Love You a Bushel and a Peck, became their theme song. Randy and Carolyn loved life together and enjoyed regularly attending Iowa State University football and women’s basketball games (among others), and the Broadway Series shows at the Des Moines Civic Center. Randy could be regularly found supporting his children and grandchildren at their many activities and events.
Music was a large part of Randy’s life. He was involved in the MCT performing in musicals which included Oliver, The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anything Goes, voice of Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, plus others. Randy directed the Colo Methodist and Trinity Lutheran Church choirs, barbershop choruses which included the Marshalltones - Marshalltown, Pride of Iowa/Harmony Delegation (Barbershop Harmony Society) - Des Moines, Harmony Central (Sweet Adelines) - Des Moines. He was talented in teaching four-part acapella harmony and coached many choruses and quartets. Randy was very active in barbershop quartet singing and sang with many quartets, winning the Central States District competition in 1992 with Sound Legacy and performed numerous times on the Barbershop Harmony Society’s (BHS) international contest stage. Some of the best quartet memories were singing at restaurants for their server, random people at conventions, and other barbershoppers who wanted to hear their favorite song. Randy was a member of the BHS for over 50 years, awarded Barbershopper of the Year with the Pride of Iowa, and was inducted into the Central States District Hall of Fame in 2013. His impact was greatly felt in the barbershop harmony world, made lifelong friendships, and he will be deeply missed.
His generosity to family and friends was boundless. From helping with cars, projects, blowing an entire neighborhood of snow, mowing yards, tilling gardens, the list was never ending. His love for his family was ever present, whether it was changing the brakes on a car, giving a thumbs up with his glee-filled smile, helping with a math problem, snuggling in his oversized chair with them or connecting with each of them through song, his family knew his love for them was unending - especially to his grandchildren who knew him as Papi Cyclone.
Randy is survived by his wife Carolyn of forty-eight years, children Chad (Jada) Weir of Altoona, Stephanie Weir of Des Moines and Tiffany (Jon) Anenson of Des Moines, grandchildren Tristan Weir, Brooke Grandstaff, Caleb Anenson and Everly Anenson. He is also survived by his siblings Marcia (Monte) Nilles, Ben (Maggie) Weir, sister-in-law Evelyn (Mark) Drummond, Aunt Marilyn, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Randy is preceded in death by his parents Ray and Jean Weir and father and mother-in-law Harold and Dorothy Parry.
---Lovingly written by his family.
