Randy Abernathy

Randy Abernathy, 69, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at his daughter’s home surrounded by his loving family.

A visitation for Randy will take place on Sunday, January 29 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Center School Cemetery. Randy was born May 3, 1953 to Gerald Abernathy and Reva Nichols. He grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he graduated from Marshalltown High School. After meeting the love of his life, Julie Johnson, they were united in marriage on April 27, 1974 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. He worked construction for RD Stewart for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, collecting things and making moonshine. In addition to his own, Randy raised many children over the years through the foreign exchange student program and foster care, as well as having a great impact on all of his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Jenny (Justin) Zindel of Des Moines, IA, Scott (Beverly) Abernathy of Mapleton, IA and Anthony Angel of Marshalltown, IA; his grandchildren: Troy (Haley), Mark (Laura), Abigail (Morgan), Jacob (Kyndal), Justin (Kylee), Kayden, Corbyn, Keaghan, Mya, Moniya, Raphael and Ryleigh; his great-granddaughter, Ruby; his special friend, LeaAnn Hitchings; siblings: Greg (Naida) Abernathy, Glena (Robert) Clarke, Tarol (Clayton) Black and Brandy (Gary) Stacker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Randy is preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Julie; grandson, Joel Abernathy; his parents, Gerald and Reva; his sister, Deana Porter and his inlaws: Burnis and Mary Jane Johnson.
