Regina Nelson, 59, longtime resident of Melbourne, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services for Regina will take place on Sunday, January 30 at 3:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Cathy Conkin officiating. Friends and family are also invited to attend a visitation one hour prior beginning at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. The daughter of Richard and Elisabeth (Catlett) Slocum, Regina was born on May 19, 1962 in Heidelberg, Germany, where her father was stationed. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1980. Regina was married to the love of her life, Joe Nelson on February 13, 1987 at Mys Place, where she had worked as a manager. After Mys Place closed, she took a management position at Mike’s gas station. The highlight of Regina’s life was her daughter, JoJo, whom she adored more than anything else. She also loved sewing and was an excellent baker, especially her salted nut rolls, snickerdoodles and Chex mix. She also enjoyed watching old movies and westerns. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, JoJo; close friends and family by choice, JoJo’s grandparents: Joe and Bambi Schmidt; her siblings: Renate (Russ) Tenold of Northwood, IA, Robert (Renee) Slocum of Kellogg, IA, Renee Long of Davenport, IA, Robin Hunt of Marshalltown, IA, Rick (Trina) Slocum of Marshalltown and Rita (Mike) Jeske of Eldora, IA and her caregivers: Kimmie Elliot and Carolyn Stanley. Regina is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Nelson; her mom and stepfather, Elisabeth Catlett and Lyle Waters; her father, Richard Slocum; sister, Rose McMullen; brother, Herman Baumgart and her grandparents: Charles and Marzina Slocum, George Aloysius, and Christina Elisabeth Zapp. Regina’s family would like to extend their deep, heartfelt gratitude to all those who have helped with Regina’s needs these last few years.
