Mr. Richard Carter, 74, of 602 Arlington Drive, Marshalltown, died Saturday morning, December 1st, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Conjoined Memorial services for Richard and his son, Rik, will be held in the spring of 2008. They will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. Richard was the only child born to Ellis and Velma (Reynolds) Carter. He was born on October 13th, 1933, in Ottumwa, and graduated from the Ottumwa High Schools Class of 1951. While in high school, he met his future wife, Janice Willard. The two were united in marriage in 1953 in Des Moines. Mr. Carter furthered his education at the Brethren College in Kansas, Iowa State University and received his Masters Degree from Rolla, Missouri in Mathematics and Computer Science. He taught at the Knoxville (Iowa) High School for 6 years and was an active member of the Jaycees. The family moved to Marshalltown in 1964, where Richard taught computers and math for an additional 28 years until retiring in 1992. He also was a substitute teacher for 6 years and was assistant wrestling coach for 15 years. Richard was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church and the NEA. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 54 years, Jan, his daughters: Cher (Clyde) Rogers of Nevada and Cathryn (Mark) Partlow of Story City, daughter-in-law Kimberly Carter of Lees Summit, Missouri, grandchildren Mark, Megan, Cassie, Nicole, Chase, Jake, Emily and Quinn and great-grandchildren: Mark, Lance, Bailey, Jaden and one on the way. In death he has rejoined his parents and son, Rik who died in 2002.
