Richard Dean Carver was born December 25, 1947 to parents Dean and Margurite (Hunt) Carver in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was the second born of four. Rich attended school in Council Bluffs until just before he was 18 when joined the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was later honorably discharged and began taking classes at Western Iowa Community College where he received his associates degree.
On August 17, 1969, Rich was united in marriage to the love of his life Pamela Sunderman at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarinda, Iowa. Together they began a family raising four children, Monty, Eric, Kenneth, and Monica. They made their homes in Council Bluffs, Iowa and Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Rich worked as a truck driver for years and as a civil engineer and also dabbled in small engine repairs. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. and the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Marshalltown. In free time, he loved to go fishing, watch anything John Wayne, reading books, camping and working at Cherry Glen Campground in Des Moines volunteering with Pamela over the last three summers. He was affectionately known as “grandpa grumpy” and “Sally” to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pamela Carver; his children, Eric (Sonja) Carver, Kenneth Carver, and Monica (Jeff) Balk; his daughter-in-law, Rochelle Carver; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his father-in-law Arlo Sunderman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his son, Monty Carver; his parents, Dean and Margurite Carver; and his siblings, Nancy Prien, Michael Carver, and Diane Herzberg.
